Smallmouth

More Updates Coming Soon!
Smallmouth Bass are one of Indiana's greatest natural resources. Smallies have a great reputation among anglers for their great fighting spirit and relative eagerness to take lures. Another great thing about them is that they are everywhere and there are tons of great places to chase after them. The vast majority of rivers in our state have great populations of these tenacious fish. There are also good populations of these fish in northern lakes including Lake Michigan. Odds are that no matter where you live in our state, you are within just a few minutes of a body of water where you can find these fish. I feel like too much of Indiana fishing relies on stocking programs and I'm glad to see a species of fish that is thriving without any stocking.

These fish can be caught on a wide variety of lures. Those using standard tackle can score well using a range of crankbaits. Soft plastics always work well and I particularly like using swimbaits as they seem to produce great results. Poppers and other topwaters always seem to take quite a few fish during the hot summer months. And last but not least, spinners will definitely produce fish. Many different types of spinners will work, from tiny in-line spinners to big double bladed spinners, you almost can't go wrong with something flashy when the fish are aggressive.
At times fly fishing can be just as effective or soemtimes more effective that standard casting or spinning gear.
I have had tremendous success in the last few years catching big Smallmouth incidentally when fishing for Northern Pike. The big fish really seem to like the larger lures that we use for the Pike, and since I have begun using a flourocarbon leader for Pike I have seen my success with big Smallies increase dramatically over using tradional wire or steel leaders.
With that said, fishing for Smallmouth and targeting them specifically is definitely one of my favorite things to do in Indiana.

Small Stream Smallmouth

Some of the smallest streams in the state can hold the Smallmouth Bass of a lifetime!
