This was the first man made white water course in the country. Three gates called the "head gates" control the flow of water from the St. Joseph River into a manmade channel. Fiberglass and wooden obstacles are used to create class 2 whitewater elements. This course is open to the public during summer weekends and is a great place to learn and practice whitewater boating. It is also a relatively safe environment to learn in as numerous lifeguards are stationed along the course and will rescue and help you if needed. Here is a link to the official site for the course:
The combination of wind and waves can create some great kayak surfing opportunities on the Indiana shoreline of Lake Michigan. Crash through the breakers and ride over rollers until you find a good wave to turn on and surf! The link below is a wave forecast for Lake Michigan and can be used to plan a trip. 4-7 foot waves can be a lot of fun. Anything bigger than that gets pretty intimidating:
