This summer has been very different for me. The past several summers I have been targeting Pike a lot more than other species. This summer has been very different. The rain didn't let up for several months and even when it did it took quite some time for rivers to come back into shape. The first rivers that came down were the good Smallmouth rivers. So when I set out to fish for Smallmouth, I ended up rediscovering my love for this fish. I have been very fortunate to catch some amazing fish and this past weekend was no different. Throughout the weekend I fished 3 different rivers and ended up catching nice Smallmouth out of them all.
On Friday evening 8/14 I fished a local creek with a friend from work. He hadn't been out fishing in years so he was extremely excited to get out on the water. I let him borrow my spare kayak for the trip. He was using spinning gear and threw soft plastics all night and caught a variety of fish including Smallmouth, Rock Bass, and Sunfish. He had an absolute blast and I'm glad that he was finally able to get out and fish with me! I was fly fishing with a big streamer and landed quite a few Smallmouth including several very nice fish. The first picture is of a 17''er that demolished my streamer in a deep run. As I was fighting it, there was a second fish chasing it that was just as big or bigger than it was. It gave me a great fight and several jumps on the 6 weight. The second picture is of a 15 1/2'' fish. I could see it chasing my fly and it didn't take until I let the fly just sink slowly in front of it. It was awesome getting to see the fish react to the fly in the clear water. I threw a spinner bait in known Pike spots and didn't come up with anything.
On Saturday 8/15 I fished a section of the Elkhart River. I have been looking at and scouting this river for a while now and I finally had a chance to get on it and give it a try. On my way to the access site, I noticed a sign that said "road closed 3.8 miles ahead" I was hoping that 3.8 miles was further than the access point. It was not. The bridge over the river was out and the access site was just on the other side of the river. Needless to say I had to find another way around and it delayed me by 15 or 20 minutes. Once on the water, I was very impressed with my chosen stretch of river. The water itself is a clear but tea color similar to rivers I've seen in Michigan or Canada. The river meanders quite a bit and overall is very fast flowing. It has nice riffles and runs, some deep pools, and a multitude of laydowns and other cover. Truth be told, I was fishing for Pike on this trip and spent the vast majority of the time fishing with a spinning rod and a large spinner bait looking for that river monster. However, I immediately started catching Smallies and that seemed to be the overall theme for the day. In a particularly deep and awesome looking pool, I felt a large fish grab my lure and head shake over and over again. I thought for sure I had finally managed to hook up with a large Pike. After some impressive runs and several good shows of strength the fish came into view. It was a HUGE Smallmouth. At 18 1/2 inches long, this was by far my biggest Smallie of the weekend. It's length did not do it's true size justice. This fish was tall, wide, and thick! Truly a trophy river Smallie. I did start to see a few pike and before long I had landed my first hammer handle Pike below a small spillway. After releasing the Pike, I pulled out my fly rod to try for some Smallmouth below the spillway. On a retrieve, I noticed a Pike sitting on the bottom. My fly was less than 10 feet away from it and approaching fast. Before I knew it, the fish lunged forward and grabbed my fly. I hooked the fish perfectly and the battle was on! It was a good fish, I'm estimating around 30 inches and it was an absolute handful on the 6 weight. It ended up running under a log and quickly broke me off. What a disappointment! They always say that you remember the fish you lose better than the ones you caught. I definitely think there is some truth to that. Later on I did end up catching a fat, healthy 24'' Pike. The only downfall to the evening is that the mosquitoes were awful! I reapplied bug spray 3 times and still ended up with a fair amount of bites. All in all though this river is a true Indiana gem. I will be making the trip back before long.
The last trip on Sunday 8/16 was an altogether different story than the other two. I took Randy Bush of Predator Pursuit guide service out after some river Pike. I had high hopes for the day but the fish never did materialize. We spent almost 4 hours pounding the river and never did see a pike. It was a tough day and I'm disappointed that we didn't even see a Pike. I did however catch a decent 15 1/2'' Smallie. It was my only fish for the day. We did get to see a couple of eagles over the river and spend a nice afternoon on the water. Upon returning to get my truck, I realized that my spare key was not working to unlock the doors. I spent the next 10 minutes breaking into my own truck before finally getting it unlocked and driving back to pick up Randy. So I take a Musky guide Pike fishing, don't catch any Pike, and then lock myself out of my own truck. not my most stellar day ever but hey, it was an adventure.

8/10/15 Gaspergou and Smallmouth Too!
You know that place that you've driven past many times and always wondered whether or not it holds fish? You do? Yeah that's the place. Well, I'm here to tell you that you should get out there and give it a shot. You never know what you might find. It could be an unexpected fishing gem right in the middle of town even. Monday night I got out of work early enough to make a trip to the river with Mike. The day before, Mike had gotten out and fished this section of river with some great results. So on his recommendation, I finally took the chance to fish a spot I have looked at for years and always wondered about. The spot in question is a decent paddle from the nearest access point. The game plan was simple but extremely effective. Troll crankbaits to the spot then do some casting with the same lures. Almost immediately I hooked into my first fish. What's it going to be? The anticipation built while the fish took one more run for the bottom before coming into view. Cue the infamous Freshwater Drum. If you've never caught one of these fighters, you are missing out! They readily take lures, get pretty big, and fight pretty hard for their size. Over the course of the evening I boated 4 of these beauties, all over 16 inches! It seemed like I had the most luck when my crankbait was occasionally ticking the bottom. I also caught a few Smallmouth Bass off of rip rap banks. The biggest of which is pictured below. This fish hit right at the boat and immediately went air born! I love Smallies and love seeing them in our rivers. If you take nothing else away form this post, I guess what I'm trying to say is...GET OUT THERE!!!! That spot you've always looked at could be amazing and you will never know if you never try!
8/7/15 Another River Pike Adventure
Kelly and I took a brief trip to the river looking to get into some Northern Pike action. Kelly had 3 chances as fish blew up on her lure or just followed it to the boat. She never did quite connect with any of these river monsters. I managed to catch a decent fish on a large streamer and it was nice to get another Pike on the fly rod. What a nice way to spend a Friday evening. I'm looking forward to seeing Kelly getting some revenge!
8/6/15 Creek Trip with Friends
Malachi, Larry, and I hit a creek on Thursday after work to fish for Smallmouth and Pike. The two of them had never floated this section of stream before so they were understandably excited to get on the water. Malachi fished with spinning gear all night and had some very consistent success on Rock Bass, Smallmouth, and even caught a Pike. Larry and I struggled with the fly rods for a while. Eventually, the fishing picked up and I had plenty of good action on a large streamer. At one point, I threw my firsy cast to a good looking pool. As I was stripping the fly back to me, I could see a Smallie behind it chasing with every twitch of the fly. I let it sit for a second and the fish inhaled it. I set the hook and almost right away the fly came out of the fishes mouth. I quickly cast it back and in a split second a different and much larger fish came up and just absolutely smashed my lure. After a long and crazy fight ,I landed my biggest Smallmouth to date on a fly rod. The fish was just short of the 19'' mark. It was a beast and was just absolutely beautiful. What a privilege to get the chance to catch and release such a magnificent fish. It was certainly the highlight of my trip. Larry continued to struggle and actually managed to break his fly rod at one point. I hope he is not deterred and will continue to come out fishing with me! He is still very much a beginning kayaker and is having trouble controlling both the kayak and his fly rod at the same time. It can be a difficult endeavor and I'm just now getting to point where I am pretty comfortable with it. I ended the night with a nice 14'' fish and Malachi caught a small, hammer handle Pike. It was a great night on the water.

8/2/15 Quick Pike Adventure
I had about an hour and a half to get out to my favorite Pike spot on Sunday. More rivers in Indiana are finally getting to a fishable level. I have a 7 foot, heavy power, fast action rod that I had modified to have a large front grip specifically to fish for river Pike. The rod turned out to be just perfect and comfortable to handle and cast. I was also tasked with throwing a spinner that was tied by a local fly tyer to try it out. The spinner looked great in the water and the fish thought so too! I made the trip early in the morning getting to the river by 7:00. Within my first few casts I started to see fish. I had several follows similar to Musky fishing. I need to start doing a figure 8 while fishing for Pike. I feel like I would have definitely had a shot at catching at least two more if I had done something with the lure at boat side. Regardless, I pretty quickly landed a nice one over 30 inches (my measuring board is 30'' for reference). It gave me a wonderful fight and released well. Before I knew it though it was time to head out. I was meeting up to go to the East Race in South Bend for some white water kayaking. It was a fun trip and I'm looking to get back out again in the near future.
